The Background as a Quantum Observable: Einstein’s Hole Argument in a Quasiclassical Context

نویسنده

چکیده

We consider a thought experiment measuring the decoherence for quasiclassical superpositions of gravitational field. The hole argument allows to prove that a covariant (background-free) theory is completely unable to define the outcome of this experiment and is therefore not viable. Instead, the results of experiments of this type allow to reconstruct a common background shared by all superposed gravitational fields.

A Quantum Variant of Einstein’s Hole Argument

We extend Einstein’s hole argument into the quantum domain, and argue that quantum observables for quasiclassical superpositional states of gravitational fields require additional information to be well-defined, namely, relative positions of the gravitational fields involved in superpositional states. As a consequence, for the definition of these quantum observables we need a

A New Spin on the Hole Argument.∗

This brief paper shows how an exact analogue of Einstein’s original hole argument can be constructed in the loop representation of quantum gravity. The new argument is based on the embedding of spin-networks in a manifold and the action of the diffeomorphism constraint on them. The implications of this result are then discussed. I argue that the conclusions of many physicists working on loop qu...

Bell ’ s inequality is violated in classical systems as well as quantum systems by Shiro

Bell’s inequality itself is usually considered to belong to mathematics and not quantum mechanics. We think that this is making our understanding of Bell’ theory be confused. Thus in this paper, contrary to Bell’s spirit (which inherits Einstein’s spirit), we try to discuss Bell’s inequality in the framework of quantum theory with the linguistic Copenhagen interpretation. And we clarify that th...

An Einstein manuscript on the EPR paradox for spin observables

A formulation by Einstein of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen incompleteness argument found in his scientific manuscripts is presented and briefly commented on. It is the only known version in which Einstein discussed the argument for spin observables. The manuscript dates, in all probability, from late 1954 or early 1955 and hence also represents Einstein’s latest version of the incompleteness argu...

Is gravitational entropy quantized?

In Einstein’s gravity, the entropy of horizons is proportional to their area. Several arguments given in the literature suggest that, in this context, both area and entropy should be quantized with an equallyspaced spectrum for large quantum numbers. But in more general theories (like, for example, in the black hole solutions of Gauss-Bonnet or Lanczos-Lovelock gravity) the horizon entropy is n...
